There has been a worldwide response to the death of Miep Gies, the last surviving member of the group that helped Anne Frank and her family to go into hiding during the Second World War. Mrs Gies died on Monday aged 100 after a brief illness.
In a letter to Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Israeli President Shimon Peres wrote that Miep Gies had allowed the world to learn of the dreams of a young girl, whose spirit lives on. It was Mrs Gies who salvaged Anne’s diary after her arrest.
The Israeli holocaust institute Yad Vashem has devoted a page of its website to Miep Gies. The Anne Frank Foundation has received hundreds of condolences from around the world.
