The International Olympics Committee, IOC, has announced that women's boxing will first appear on the Olympic programme during the London 2012 Games. Women boxed in London as early as 1720. Women's boxing appeared as a demonstration sport in the 1904 Olympics, but was not repeated.
Women will compete on three levels in London: flyweight, lightweight and middleweight. The number of events in the men's boxing competition will be reduced by one.
