Williams wins fifth Australian Open

Published on 30 January 2010 - 1:05pm
More about:

Serena Williams has defeated Belgium's Justine Henin 6-4 3-6 6-2 to win the Australian Open for the fifth time.

The tense match in the Rod Laver Arena lasted two hours. Despite her defeat, it was still a triumph for Henin, who only returned to the professional circuit earlier this month after quitting the game in May 2008. Winning her 12th Grand Slam singles title, Williams has joined American Billie Jean King in equal sixth place on the list of female Grand Slam singles champions.
