Wilders says No to EU flag in Amsterdam

Published on : 12 July 2012 - 1:35pm | By ((C) Daniel Kinpara)
More about:

The city of Amsterdam is in hot water with Geert Wilders, leader of the populist Freedom party. He has sharply criticised the city council’s decision to fly the European Union flag, calling it “utterly ridiculous”.

Mr Wilders even went so far as to pose a parliamentary question about the affair to outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Mr Rutte’s VVD party is a partner in the capital’s executive council, and Mr Wilders demanded that the prime minister call his political colleagues to order over the matter.

Mr Wilders incorrectly assumed that Amsterdam had decided to fly the EU flag instead of the Dutch flag. Normally only the city’s own flag is raised over the town hall. The Dutch flag is also raised on national holidays and to mark special occasions.

The council has now decided that on workdays the red, black and white crosses of Amsterdam’s flag will be joined by the blue and gold stars of the European Union. A spokesperson said the decision was taken “to express solidarity with Europe”.

He's such an ass, and so, apparently, are all his supporters if they can't see it.

I'm behind Geert 100% on this one. The EU and ECB is slowly transforming into a political force Adolf Hitler would have been proud of. Thanks to the independence of The Netherlands and Amsterdam we can still enjoy websites like http://11il.com The sooner we get out of the EU the better for all of us.

With Germany controlling the EU at present , flying the flag of the EU masters must bring back memories different flag then but same attitude. The Dutch must learn to obey their present masters!

The Dutch people would be well advised to remember that Mr. Wilders and his party are funded by the same rightwing American extremists who are responsible for destroying the American middle class and turning the ideals of freedom and democracy into a political hypocritical sham of lies and deceit which seeks ultimately to destroy, rather than support, the inalienable rights of every human being. Their motto "ordo ab chao" (order out of chaos) clearly defines his primary role within Dutch society.

First of all Jorge, are there complaints about city workers not performing their duties. If not, why are you impliying that they took time from work to raise the flag. Secondly, before you falsely assume that your taxes pay the full salaries of these employees, I STRONGLY URGE YOU to take a look at yourself, substract all the benefits YOU receive from the state and then see how much it remains of your precious taxes mr. Scroodge. I would also urge you to visit again the World War museums since your goldfish-like memory has forgotten the last time you "could do without" a society of nations.

Jorge from Amsterdam 14 July 2012 - 6:11pm / Netherlands

There is absolutely no need for Amsterdam to "express solidarity with Europe." What would it accomplish? This is just another dumb decision by people who are too full of themselves to realize they are supposed to work for the people who elected them and/or whose taxes pay their salaries.

Most people in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, or any place in Europe don't give a diddly-squat for Europe. Europe is a politician's wet dream: an opportunity to spend more and more money while pretending to make a difference.

We can do without their delusions of grandeur.

Wilders assumed things incorrectly, thus he should stop bringing up this flag issue.

This was the party that removed the orange-white-blue Princes flag from its offices after freesheet Spits printed photographs of the controversial flag through a window. The flag was used by the NSB (Dutch Nazis) during World War II. http://www.spitsnieuws.nl/archives/binnenland/2011/05/anonieme_pvver_wij...
