The organisation has a six-level pandemic alert system, the Mexican flu outbreak is now at phase five. Mr Fukuda said a pandemic could be imminent now that the virus has spread to Africa. A 12-year-old Egyptian girl contracted the disease in the United States.
The Mexican flu also continues to spread elsewhere in the world. Chile has reported its first fatality as a result of the disease. The official death toll is now at 117, with most of the deaths occurring in Mexico.
