More about:

In 1967, the countries of the world got together and decided that no one country could claim the moon or other planets. But Dennis Hope says that individuals can. So he’s set up the Lunar Embassy and has sold off plots of moon to more than 5 million part-owners. Earth Beat host Marnie Chesterton speaks with Dennis, who is also the President of the Moon.

Discussion

Ed Tracey 14 November 2010 - 11:34pm / USA

This question was answered best by the composer Ray Henderson and lyricists Buddy De Sylva and Lew Brown in 1927 with their classic that begins, "The moon belongs to everyone - the best things in life are free".

jasmin 6 November 2010 - 10:53am / India

I own the Moon....;)...The Universe belongs to all, and to none...we are just visitors in this Universe, and visitors do not have ownership rights!

Vera Gottlieb 4 November 2010 - 9:04pm / Germany

Why not take this question a step further: who owns the universe? One question just as ridiculous as the next.

Anonymous 2 November 2010 - 7:19pm / Lalaland

It would be good to buy a parcel on the Moon to set up moonshine stills.

JW 2 November 2010 - 10:56am / NL

It's ironic that earth's trees are harvested to manufacture the paper for these meaningless documents. Reality bows to fantasy.

Hiram2 2 November 2010 - 7:27pm

"Reality bows to fantasy."......Wow, whose reality are you referring to JW, yours? Come on my friend! Not everybody lives in your fantasy world. You sound the Pope and his minons who persecuted people for not beliving the world was flat. To them and their time period, it was a fantasy for someone to speak out against the church and it's religious law that the earth was the center of the universe.

Janv, you wouldn't understand.

EuroBound 2 November 2010 - 7:31am / USA

As an American, I'd imagine the American government thinks they own the moon. They and a fair amount of American people think they pretty much own or rule everything.

janv 3 November 2010 - 2:37am / canada

I would have to agree with you on that one. The thing is, Canadians are wannabe Americans.

Anonymous 1 November 2010 - 8:24pm / cuba

What Mr, Dennis,
Does not is that on United Nations has the new Cuba;s Constitution in which a Parcel for pacific reaseach is a Cuba's property Land. since 1969 in which it was redacted.
