Wet start for famous Dutch walking event

More about:

The world’s largest walking event got off to a rainy start early this morning in the east of the Netherlands.

More than 41,000 people have signed up for this year’s Nijmegen Vierdaagse, or four day march. The first group of walkers set off in the rain at 4am this morning to cover either 30, 40 or 50 kilometres.

This is the 96th edition of the Vierdaagse, which was originally set up as an army exercise to keep soldiers fit after the introduction of motor vehicles.

Five thousand soldiers from 32 different countries are taking part this year, walking the 40 kilometre route with a 10 kilo rucksack.

O come now!!! Walking is militarism! Whats next, breathing?

CD Tauber 18 July 2012 - 7:19am

The Nijmegse Vierdagse is a celebration of militarism. I believe that it should be boycotted for that reason. Walking is marvelous. Why not do it for peace instead of war?

Celebration of militarism? This is keeping fit! Its a celebration of get together, walk 40K with a 10kg rack-sack, built up a national spirit and be part of something bigger than ''me, myself and I''. Stop being a 'bitter lemon'' and stop poisoning the society with negative thoughts and stupid comments about militarism and boycotts!
It should be a national day that everybody goes on a walk to loose the toxins form the brain!
