Vote recount in Rotterdam

Published on 10 March 2010 - 11:22am
More about:

A recount is to be held of all the votes cast in last week's local council election in Rotterdam.

The decision was taken by the Electoral Monitoring Commission on the advice of Rotterdam's mayor, Ahmed Aboutaleb. The commission also decided that an independent body should oversee the recount.

The recount will be carried out by public employees who were not involved in the original count.

In Rotterdam last week, the Labour Party won 650 votes more than the local party, Liveable Rotterdam, which ended in second place. Marco Pastors of Liveable Rotterdam lodged an objection to the result on the grounds that irregularities were reported at several polling stations.

Mayor Aboutaleb did not initially regard a recount as necessary.
