A volcano eruption in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo is threatening the habitat of 40 rare chimpanzees. The rangers of the Virunga National Park are closely monitoring the situation, using United Nations helicopters.
The Nya-mura-gira volcano started erupting early on Saturday morning. Lava is flowing over the eastern slopes towards the chimpanzees.
There are also 200 rare mountain gorillas in the park, but they live in the south. Almost no people live in the area which is on UNESCO’s world heritage list.
The Nya-mura-gira is near the eastern city of Goma and is Africa’s most active volcano.
It has erupted more than 35 times since 1882. The last time was four years ago.
