Violence precedes friendly match in Amsterdam

Published on 12 August 2009 - 11:22pm
More about:

The friendly match between England and the Netherlands on Wednesday evening in Amsterdam ended in a 2-2 draw. Dirk Kuijt and Rafael van der Vaart scored two goals for the Netherlands in the first half. Jermain Defoe scored two goals for England in the second half.

Earlier in the evening, Amsterdam riot police arrested 15 football supporters in the centre of the city. Dutch police say that a group of between 250 and 300 Dutch youths, mostly Ajax fans and a small number of FC Twente supporters, sought fights with English fans. Riot police on horseback carried out a number of charges and succeeded in preventing violence between the supporters.
