Venezuela's leftist President Hugo Chávez says his country is buying Russian missiles to defend the country against foreign attacks.

The missiles have a range of 300 kilometres. The announcement comes amid soaring tensions with neighbouring Colombia, which is planning to give US forces access to several air bases, prompting Venezuelan condemnation.
