Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has accused Dutch electronics giant Philips of failing to meet its obligations regarding shipments of medical equipment to Venezuela and Cuba.
The accusation comes after former Cuban leader Fidel Castro made similar allegations last month. Mr Chávez says Venezuelan health care is in trouble because of Philips and has threatened to sue the Dutch company.
In 2006, Cuba bought medical equipment from Philips intended for Cuban health care and Cuban care projects in Venezuela. However, when spare parts were needed, Philips reportedly refused to supply them, which prompted Fidel Castro to accuse the company of 'treason'. Philips allegedly delayed the supply of spare parts as a result of US pressure.
A spokesperson for Philips told Radio Netherlands Worldwide that there had indeed been delays in supplying equipment to Cuba and Venezuela. Philips says the United States has created major bureaucratic hurdles regarding the supply of certain parts.
