Spaniard Alejandro Valverde remains in the lead after the 13th leg of the Tour of Spain. Robert Gesink from the Netherlands moved up into second place during the mountainous stage of the race, which took the cyclists through the Sierra Nevada.
A puncture meant Australian Cadel Evans slid from second to fourth place, well over one minute behind the golden jersey. The stage was won by David Moncoutie of France and ten cyclists, including Tom Boonen of Belgium and the Spaniard Oscar Freire, were knocked out of the race.
