Vaccine not to blame for baby deaths

Published on 23 February 2010 - 2:55pm
More about:

There was no connection between the deaths of three babies in the Netherlands and their vaccination against pneumococcus.

That's the conclusion reached by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment following an investigation into the Prevenar vaccine, started after the infants died last November shortly after being inoculated.

Independent researchers have confirmed that there is no correlation between the deaths and the vaccine injections. The health institute has now cleared the vaccine for general use following a temporary ban pending the outcome of the investigation.

Separate research in France has also confirmed that the vaccine fulfils all safety requirements.
