The US army is facing strong resistance from the Taliban for the first time in Operation Khanjar - or Strike of the Sword - in Afghanistan's Helmand province.
4000 marines were deployed yesterday to drive out the Taliban from the Helmand River valley. The fighting is particularly heavy to the south of Garmsir, a town situated on the river and a strategic objective in the assault. The battle was described by commanding officer Brigadier General Larry Nicholson as "a hell of a fight". One marine is confirmed dead.
It is the first major military operation for President Barack Obama since he gained office and is seen as a pivotal test of his new strategy against the Taliban, who have controlled the Helmand valley for years. Southern Afghanistan is considered the most important Taliban stronghold. The BBC reports that approximately 700 British troops will be helping the US in their efforts.
