      US to expand army

      US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has announced plans temporarily expand the US army by 22,000 troops.

       

      The move comes in response to the demands of the US missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and will initially be for a period of three years. The additional troops will bring the total number of US soldiers to 569,000.
