The American surge in Afghanistan will move focus to Kandahar later this year, U.S. officials said Monday.

Starting in June, US troops plan to push the Taliban out of Afghanistan's second-largest city by early August, the officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Once the city is cleared, the campaign will seek to "secure and deliver government" to Kandahar by mid-October.
