Uruguay elects new president

Published on 29 November 2009 - 2:00pm
More about:

A second round of voting is being held today in Uruguay between left-wing presidential candidate José Mujica and his conservative National Party opponent Luis Alberto Lacalle.

As candidate for the Broad Front, Mr Mujica - also known as El Pepe - won 48 percent of the vote in the 15 October presidential election in comparison to 30 percent for Mr Lacalle, who served as president from 1990 to 1995.

Mr Mujica was a leading member of the Tupamaros rebel movement in the 1960s and 1970s. He was captured in 1972 and after the 1973 military coup spent 14 years in a military prison, two of them at the bottom of a well.
