Urine-powered cars of the future

Published on : 24 November 2009 - 12:34pm | By Jan Huisman (Photo: Flickr/bkdc)
More about:

Could urine become the next crude oil? Professor Gerri Botte has taken the concept of turning waste into a resource rather literally.

Hybrid cars were designed to cut greenhouse emissions. They don’t run on fossil fuels – they use hydrogen. But while hydrogen is prolific in nature, hydrogen gas isn’t just floating around waiting to be collected. It has to be extracted from water, methane and other fossil fuels. And this process uses lots of energy. Which probably comes from fossil fuels, rendering the whole exercise a bit pointless.

One scientist might have found a solution to this problem by putting the pee in power – or rather taking power from pee. Gerri Botte is a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Ohio. She has invented an electrode that can create large amounts of cheap hydrogen from urine.

Earth Beat asked Professor Botte to explain pee power:

I would like to have such an eccentric car.

They already produce energy from human/animal waste through biogas plants...So, why not.'Powering by farting???'...;)

And what is next on the agenda? Powering by farting???

Researchers are working on this. Lots of energy is released through livestock flatulence. If we could harness this energy we would prevent the greenhouse gasses from being released into the atmosphere, and large amounts of energy could be extracted. Just one less thing we would need to import from Saudi Arabia, Iran, or Russia.

I agree, we should use everything the nature gave us, including our urine. Why not, if this could help us free ourselves a bit? As the author pointed out, P stands for power. I can hardly wait to take my old car to NH used cars and proudly affirm that it runs with pee. Or should I say flows?

Terri 19 March 2011 - 2:35pm

Bravo Mr. Charley!

Well said! And perhaps then lawn mowers and the like could follow suit. We could go with the ‘flow’ on many levels even if the P-powered automobile is further in the future. Think of how much water we could save in toilet flushing alone!
