UNICEF warns on child deaths

Published on 11 September 2009 - 8:22am
More about:

UNICEF says the number of child deaths is being reduced but not quickly enough. One of the United Nations' millennium development goals is to reduce the death rate among under five-year-olds to one-third of the 1990 total by the year 2015.

Last year 8.8 million young children died, 10,000 fewer per day than in 1990, but UNICEF points out that, at this rate, the millennium goal will not be reached. Its latest report shows that, last year, 40 percent of the children concerned died in just three countries: Nigeria, India and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Pneumonia and diarrhoea were the primary causes of death.

These countries spend more money on external/internal defence and other things, and public health is not a priority. If UNICEF is really sincere, it should ask these countries to provide basic care to the below poverty line people and ensure family planning. I know that some religious and ethnic groups do not practice family planning and have 5-7 children despite govt. programmes. It is just not possible to bring up such a large family in these times!
