Underperforming Islamic school to lose funding

Published on 29 October 2009 - 4:46pm
More about:

Amsterdam's city council has withdrawn its subsidy to the Islamic primary school As Siddieq. The funding of the school was suspended in August because it was found to be performing badly.

Councillor Lodewijk Asscher wrote to the school board that he has seen no improvement over the past few months. He accused the board of being unwilling to improve the teaching, and the board chairman of reneging on his earlier promise to step down.

The As Siddieq school received an annual 500,000 euro municipal grant. In addition to the withdrawal of this subsidy, the Amsterdam city council is breaking off all relations with the Islamic school. Actual closure of the school is the prerogative of Deputy Education Minister Sharon Dijksma. She has given the school until 1 March next year to get its house in order.
