The United Nations is suspending its ties with the Honduran electoral commission. The UN says that due to current circumstances it is no longer possible to guarantee that a November presidential electiion would be free and fair. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he is extremely worried about the situation in Honduras.
At least two people have been killed in new protests since President Manuel Zelaya returned unexpectedly from exile on Monday. He went to the Brazilian embassy in the capital Tegucigalpa which has offered him shelter. Hundreds of his supporters have been clashing with police outside the embassy.
Protestors have thrown stones at police, who have carried out charges, firing tear gas and clubbing demonstrators.
The government of President Roberto Micheletti is becoming increasingly isolated. Brazil is demanding that Mr Zelaya re reinstated immediately. Argentina has called for a return to democracy.
