The leaders of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) should be tried for crimes against humanity says Navi Pillay, the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The LRA is led by Joseph Kony and is based in northern Uganda. Since its formation in 1988, it has waged an armed rebellion against the Ugandan government and has also carried out attacks in the neighbouring countries of Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan. These have been comprehensively documented by the UN.
Navi Pillay says she has catalogued civilian massacres and the abduction of women and children for use as sex slaves or porters. The LRA’s violence has also left many people dead and tens of thousands homeless.
Since 2005, Joseph Kony and two other members of the LRA have been wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
