UN again calls on US to lift Cuba embargo

Published on 28 October 2009 - 9:32pm
More about:

The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favour of a resolution calling on the United States to lift its economic embargo against Cuba, which has been in place for almost half a century.

The General Assembly passed the non-binding resolution with 187 votes in favour and three against. It is the 18th consecutive year that the General Assembly has passed a resolution calling on Washington to lift the embargo. The international community had hoped that President Barack Obama would reverse the decades-old policy but although the White House has taken some steps towards easing tensions, the trade embargo has not been lifted.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez says the economic embargo is an international problem and 56 countries have been fined or punished for breaking the embargo. Venezuela called on President Obama to show that he truly deserved the Nobel Peace Prize by lifting the crippling sanctions.

The trade embargo was instituted in 1962 and Havana says it has cost the island nation hundreds of millions of euros.

Awarding tyrants with aid and support doesn't hinder them from oppressing their citizens. There are numerous examples in the world today where the UN appeases dictators, i.e. Korea, and numerous countries around the world. Appeasment perpetuates the dictators desire to control more and more. Let the Cuban government free it's people at the same time the embargo is lifted. Why must the Cubans wait for a social change to freedom. It is their right to be free of tyranny. Yes, lift the embargo and free the Cubans at the same time. Is that such a difficult thing to do? Mikhail Gorbachev compromised and freed numerous countries from Soviet control. Why can't the Castros do the same for the Cubans? No, they deserve their freedoms, now, and not at an unknown future date.

Lifting the embargo might be the surest and most effective way to introduce political, economic and social change in Cuba.

The US should lift the economic embargo against Cuba and the Cuban government should free it's people. Wouldn't it be great for the Cuban's to be a free people just like the people in Europe? Had the British and Americans not put pressure the Soviet Union, Germany and numerous other countries would still not be free. Why is ok for everyone else to enjoy the freedoms to travel but not the Cubans. I wonder how many of those leaders at the UN voted overwhelmingly in favour for the Cuban government to free it's people? As to the trade embargo costing the island nation hundreds of millions of euros. It was supposed to cost the Cuban government for violating basic freedoms of liberty. Until the people of Cuba are free from the tyranny of it's non-elected government, the US and the entire UN should cut off Cuba or any country who acts in a like manner as Cuba. Freedom isn't cheap! Therefore, drop the embargo at the same time the Cubans are free. A compromise.
