Ukraine PM drops election challenge

Published on 20 February 2010 - 1:32pm
More about:

Ukranian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has dropped her lawsuit challenging the election victory of President-elect Viktor Yanukovich.

Ms Tymoshenko says she still does not recongise Mr Yanukovich's victory but has withdrawn her challenge because the court has refused to examine the evidence of fraud she has presented. She said "this is not a court and it is not justice".

Mr Yanukovich beat Ms Tymoshenko by a mere 3.5 percent in a run-off ballot on 7 February. Ms Tymoshenko launched her challenge saying her opponent had won by widespread fraud.

Hundreds of supporters of Ms Tymoshenko have been demonstrating in front of the court house following her announcement.
