Ukraine exit polls show narrow Yanukovich win

Published on 7 February 2010 - 9:17pm
More about:

Exit polls in Ukraine's presidential run-off on Sunday indicate pro-Russian opposition leader Viktor Yanukovich is going to win.

He appears to have beaten pro-Western Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko by just a few percentage points. She is saying the difference is too small to indicate a winner.

In the run up to the poll, she complained of electoral fraud and pledged to contest the result if no clear winner emerged.

About 36 million Ukrainians were eligible to vote. The winner will succeed President Viktor Yushchenko who was swept to power in 2004 after mass demonstrations against electoral fraud turned into the Orange Revolution.
