UK warns against travelling to Timbuktu

Published on 23 November 2009 - 2:47pm
More about:

The British government has issued a travel warning for Timbuktu.

The region surrounding the remote city in northern Mali is reportedly home to small groups of militants who are held responsible for several abductions of Western tourists. In June Briton Edwin Dyer was kidnapped and killed by a group which claims to have ties with the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

Foreign Office Minister Ivan Lewis says the situation in northern Mali may deteriorate further, but the Malinese authorities say the British travel warning is disproportionate and bad for tourism.
