UK parliament rocked by expenses scandal

Published on 18 May 2009 - 6:01pm
More about:

British opposition leader David Cameron has called for early elections as a result of a scandal involving excessive expenses claimed by MPs.

The leader of the Conservatives says the scandal has paralysed British politics. Mr Cameron is calling on the electorate to demand early elections. The next general elections are scheduled to be held in June of next year.

The broadsheet The Daily Telegraph recently revealed that many MPs claim just about anything, from the mortgage interest on their second home to cleaning work on their swimming pools, dog food and even pornography. Speaker Michael Martin offered his apologies on Monday, and promised to implement reform of the allowances system.
