Two protesters killed by Uganda police

Published on 17 March 2010 - 5:03pm
More about:

At least two protesters were killed by Ugandan police and seven injured when they tried to stop President Yoweri Museveni from viewing damage caused by a fire at the Kasubi Tombs in the capital Kampala.

Thousands of members of the Buganda tribe took part in the protest. The fire destroyed the thatched roof of the Kasubi tombs, which were built for the Buganda kings in the 19th century. The tombs are listed as a UNESCO heritage site. The Buganda believe the fire was caused by arson.

The events have further exasperated relations between the president and the Bugandan King Ronald Mutebi. The two leaders fell out after the king accused the government of stopping him from visiting a part of his kingdom. At least 20 people were killed in clashes sparked by the incident.

Uganda's four ancient kingdoms, of which Buganda is the largest, were abolished in 1966, but reinstated by President Museveni in 1993 as cultural institutions without any political power.

Many Bugandans believe the king should have more power than the government allows.
