Two FARC hostages to be released

Published on 17 March 2010 - 9:57pm
More about:

Helicopters of the Brazilian air force are on standby near the Colombian border to pick up two Colombian soldiers held hostage by the FARC rebel movement.

One of the two has been held by the FARC for 12 years. The other is being released because he is seriously ill. The FARC promised to release the two soldiers after Sunday's parliamentary elections.

The FARC says that handing over the two hostages to the International Red Cross is a gesture of good will.

The left-wing Colombian opposition senator Piedad Córdoba says she has received the exact coordinates of the location where the transfer is to take place.

The two Colombians were part of a group of 23 hostages FARC wants to trade against captured guerrilla fighters.
