In Georgia, a woman and her eight-year-old daughter were killed when a Soviet war monument was blown up to make way for a new building. Several other people were injured. Georgian authorities say safety regulations were ignored.
The 46-meter-high monument to the Soviet dead of World War II was located in Kutaisi, the country’s second largest city. It was being demolished to make way for a new parliament building.
Many of the city’s residents opposed the demolition, saying it was disrespectful. At least 300,000 Georgians died in the struggle against the Nazis.
