At least 23 people have died and more than a hundred injured in twin suicide bomb attacks in the Iraqi province of Anbar. The state's governor is among the injured.
Police in the provincial capital Ramadi said the attacks took place in quick succession in the centre of the city, some 100 kilometres west of Baghdad. Many of the injured are Iraqi security forces.
In the first blast, a suicide bomber detonated explosives in a vehicle. The second suicide attack was carried out by a bomber on foot and took place as the governor, Qassim Mohammed, came out from his nearby office to inspect the damage. Initially state television reported that the governor was killed in the attacks, but a later phone call from his deputy to Reuters said he was still alive and receiving treatment in Baghdad.
Anbar is generally regarded as quiet but the number of attacks there have risen considerably in recent months. Analysts blame the attacks on al-Qaeda trying to destabilise the country ahead of elections in March.
