Twelve people have been killed in an attack in north-western Pakistan. A suicide bomber detonated a car bomb at a livestock market in a town south of Peshawar. At least 36 people were injured.
The target was probably the town's mayor, who died in the attack. He was a former Taliban sympathiser who had turned against the Islamist rebels. There had also been previous attempts on his life.
Since the army in north-western Pakistan began an offensive against the Taliban, the country has been hit by a wave of attacks. In just a few weeks, more than three hundred civilians and soldiers have been killed.
