In Turkmenistan part of a gas pipeline transporting gas from Central Asia to China has been opened.
The gas comes from the Yolotan field, Turkmenistan's largest gas field.
The pipeline means that China is no longer dependent on Russia for gas. When it is finished in 2012-2013, the pipeline will be 7000 kilometres long. The China National Petroleum Corporation hopes eventually to import 40 billion cubic metres of gas per year.
Chinese President Hu Jintao and leaders from Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan attended the opening ceremony.
