A smoking ban has gone into effect in Turkey.
People may no longer smoke in bars, cafés or restaurants. Those who break the law risk a fine of 32 euros. Those who run such establishments and who take no steps to prevent smoking risk a first fine of 260 euros. Each further breach of the law will cost them 2600 euros.
In Turkey, almost 40 percent of the population over 15 years old smoke. However, opinion polls say that 95 percent of the population supports the government's anti-smoking policy.
