Central Italy was hit last night by a heavy tremor registering 4.4 on the Richter scale.
There are no immediate reports of casualties. There have been repeated tremors in the Abruzzo region since the big earthquake in April but last night's was particulary strong.
The April earthquake claimed almost 300 lives and destroyed parts of the historic city of L'Aquila. Tens of thousands of residents lost their homes, many are still living in temporary shelters.
L'Aquila will host the G8 summit next month. Its being held there, instead of in Sardinia, for symbolic reasons.
