Togo abolishes death penalty

Published on 24 June 2009 - 3:00pm
More about:

The parliament of Togo has unanimously voted in favour of repealing the death penalty.

Although the last execution in the West African country took place in 1978, capital punishment has remained in the penal code. There are currently six people on death row in Togo.

The parliamentary vote was attended by Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who is campaigning to abolish the death penalty throughout the world. Togo is the 15th country in the African Union to abolish capital punishment.
