Several thousand people in the Dutch city of Dordrecht joined a silent march for Milly Boele, the 12-year-old girl who was killed by a neighbour earlier this week.
Dressed in pink, Milly's favourite colour, many mourners were carrying candles, torches and balloons. After the march, the mayor gave a speech. People then released the balloons and placed the flowers, candles and torches at the foot of a tree.
The public prosecutor's office has announced that Sander V., the neighbour who confessed to killing the girl, is being accused of manslaughter. The announcement came after the man, a 26-year-old police officer, was questioned by a magistrate.
The public prosecutor's office has requested a psychiatric study of the suspect.
An autopsy was conducted on Thursday but it is not yet clear if the girl was sexually abused. The authorities say a number of tests need to be carried out first.
