Thailand deports Hmong asylum seekers

Published on 28 December 2009 - 8:34am
More about:

Thailand has started deporting 4000 members of an ethnic minority group called Hmong from a refugee camp to Laos.

Thousands of soldiers and government officials cleared Huay Nam Khao camp in the Phetchabun province and transported the asylum seekers to the border in busses.

There is huge international criticism of the deportations. Amnesty International fears they will be persecuted in Laos because the Hmong fought alongside the US troops in the Vietnam war in the 1960s and 1970s.

Bangkok says many Hmong are illegal, economic refugees.
