Exactly ten years ago Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and Argentinian-born Máxima Zorreguieta were married.
They made their marriage vows in Amsterdam on the allegedly auspicious date of 02-02-02, a sunny and unusually warm winter's day (15 degrees Celsius). The church service took place in the Nieuwe Kerk ("New Church"); the civil ceremony was held in the big hall of Amsterdam's Berlage Stock Exchange building.
Royal duties
Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima usually accompany Queen Beatrix on her state visits, ensuring that they will be well-prepared when he eventually takes the throne. Meanwhile, Princess Máxima is active all over the world in her capacity as UN Special Advocate for microfinance, promoting universal access to financial services. Her husband is a member of the International Olympic Committee and active in international water management. Both the prince and the princess are members of the Council of State, the country's highest political and judicial body.
