Tens of thousands flee fighting in DRC

Published on 24 July 2009 - 2:24pm
More about:

The UN refugee acency UNHCR reports that 35,000 people are leaving their homes in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Fighting between the government army and FDLR rebels is forcing people to seek refuge in forests, schools and churches. According to the office of the UNHCR, civilians are an easy target for the rebels.

The violence is a result of the government's attempts to pressure the rebels into laying down their arms. Early reports indicate incidents of abuse, rape and murder. The eastern part of DR Congo is home to a total of 1.8 million refugees.
