Ten key figures of the Arab Spring

Published on : 15 December 2011 - 4:38pm | By Erik Klooster (Photo: ANP)
More about:

On 17 December 2010, Tunisian fruit seller Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire to protest against the regime. That was the beginning of the Arab Spring. Within a few months the governments of Tunisia, Egypt and – with some support from abroad – Libya fell.

Radio Netherlands Worldwide presents ten Arab activists who played an important part in the revolutions. Earlier this week, five of them - including Bouazizi - were awarded the Sacharov Prize by the European Parliament.
