Tanja Nijmeijer: why I joined the FARC

Published on : 3 November 2010 - 2:50pm | By RNW News Desk (screenshot: RNW)
More about:

In this second exclusive video, Tanja Nijmeijer talks - in Dutch - about her early experiences in Colombia and her reasons for joining the FARC rebel movement. She explains how she began to realise what the Colombian government was doing to its citizens and how she became a guerrilla.

Tanja Nijmeijer has spent about eight years living in FARC camps in the jungles of Colombia, but she still thinks often about the Netherlands. In an exclusive interview with RNW - in Spanish - she says she often used to listen to Radio Netherlands Worldwide.

"In the early years I used to listen to Radio Netherlands a lot. They used to play the Wilhelmus [the Dutch national anthem, ed.] at the end of the broadcasts [on the Dutch shortwave service, ed.]. I got nostalgic whenever I heard it. It was played during the football World Cup as well and that made me homesick too."

She also misses her family and friends:

"I get nostalgic when I think about my friends too and, like the other fighters, it makes me sad to think about my family and about the Dutch landscape. In the beginning I was even nostalgic when I spoke Dutch, since I had to speak Spanish all day and couldn't speak my own language. My Dutch was better then. Now I speak better Spanish and I don't feel homesick any more. I still get nostalgic, though, when I think about the Netherlands, about cheese and little things like that."

It is but the great feat from the 7% intellectual prowess utilised by mankind.
The voyage of discovery is just not in seeking new landscapes in having new eyes.
Her husband Radomir, upon hearing in the incident, made the
trip next door to get for the bottom in the situation.

Why somebody who is envolved in figthing for freedom should be brainwashed ?

Funny she thinks her Spanish is "better". She absolutely mangles Spanish, sounding like she is hawking up spit, and with a tone fall that is entirely incorrect. It's like the Muppets Swedish Chef were speaking (yes, she's Dutch not Swedish, I speak Swedish), though she is mostly rapid in speaking.

I woke up from a dream where this girl was talking to me, I did not know who the girl was. I got on the computer to check my email and I see this picture of this women in the corner of my screen under the news section. "Its her!" I think. Very strange, not sure if she was trying to send out messages, but she does look identicle to the women in my dream. Now I find out about her, the militia she is working under, FARC, and that she is considered a terriost in america. Pretty wild. Anyways, Tanja if your reading, were you trying to reach me? Haha, Good Luck if you are!

When a government has become derelict in it's duties to it's people then it should be removed, if not by popular vote then by force. Too bad FARC hasn't remained true to it's cause. Corruption, blood lust and all the other negative facets of the society that they proclaim they want to distance the Columbian people from have seeped into their own ranks. Without the overwhelming support of the peasantry FARC will never overthrow the government. Some individuals stand to become filthy rich by keeping these dirty wars protacted and at the expense of the innocent, something the little Dutch rebel should have thought of before running off into the jungle half cocked. FARC? With it's current MO? Not to mention her own personal safety, she won't make an ounce of difference in the jungle. Che wouldn't be impressed. Best of luck, the people of Columbia.

And the weapons? M16, made in the US.

garcalej 26 November 2010 - 5:30am / Venezuela

This woman has clearly been brainwashed. She has been fed so much propaganda she can hardly think for herself anymore. The FARC don't give a damn about "the people." They'd take over a town and tell the people to take whatever land they wanted from the big landowners. When the AUC would come to take it back, the FARC would disappear into the jungle, leaving "the people" to fend for themselves against machetes and machine guns. The sooner the FARC is destroyed, the sooner the war will end.

Anonymous 11 November 2010 - 4:24am / Colombia

I'm shocked to see that some people even in Europe may consider the FARC (I refuse to call them people's army) fights for a fair cause, and probably this is why organizations as Fighters and Lovers exist. It is a huge lie to say they fight for justice, as they recruit children and young people by threateningand sometimes assassinating their families if they refuse to join. Within the FARC lies a hierarchy that gives benefits to the highest ranks, women are forced to establish a relationships they may not want in fear of being punished with assuming high risk positions in battle. They plant bombs in working class neighborhoods, kidnap people, commit massacres literally wiping out whole towns, extort farmers who are the poorest and the noblest of men... I think Ms. Nijmeijer was somehow brainwashed or this might be her own vision of a fairer world, either way the FARC has done nothing but hurt my country and it is sad that some people see them as a just revolutionary organization... They act against their own people sometimes agains the humbler and poorest. That is no revolution, it is plain terrorism.

Tanja, u wanna die there?
Ok, no problem

Anonymous 4 November 2010 - 8:00pm / ecuador

The Guerrilla fight in Colombia was 40 years ago. The guerillas now are killers. Drugdealers. And the most sad thing is that they are putting mines all over the jungle and the colombian indians are without legs. This lady is going to hell. Sorry but she is totally wrong. They are making a lot of money. You will see her in a cople of years driving a ferrari in Monaco.

Jose Luis Rodriguez 4 November 2010 - 6:32pm / Buenos Aires

I think things are very clear, and Tanja is there voluntarily and is very proud to be a guerrilla fighter, and as invited the Colombian government and the military to go there and will be received with an arsenal that she named him that because I think Tanja penalty good government to the Colombian army's wrath to be visited by orders of saints as president visited Mr. Mono Jojoy or Mr. Reyes and God forgive ................
I think it is very challenging and this will not last long with it is signing your destination and hope that the Colombian government to continue so

osevo 4 November 2010 - 4:13pm / ant

el 99 % de los colombianos detestamos las FARC EP no es verdad que luchen por el pueblo , solo nos llenan de terror a cuenta del poder economico y el narcotrafico.

99% of Colombians hate the FARC-EP is not really fighting for the people, only fill us with terror on account of economic power and drug trafficking.

osevo 4 November 2010 - 4:37pm / ant

to!! do not forget us! in lactualidad and for many years but the Colombian peasant and the wanderer can not walk alone for their fields as the coward of the FARC-EP we have specialty was full of landmines to protect their drug crops.

Anonymous 4 November 2010 - 3:30pm / Colombia

Hi there in Europe. This is a beutiful country, but there are a few idiots (FARC "rebels") that they will never take the power. Becouse they are so terrorist, ignorants, dumb, anachronistic. They (FARC) say they are the people's army, but we do not recognize them it as such. They (FARC) don't represent our interests.
It is false that our goverment are terrorist, or our goverment oppress to people. In fact, our bigger issue is FARC.
Attentively colombian citizens.

Anonymous 4 November 2010 - 3:05pm

This is an idiot's story.

Anonymous 4 November 2010 - 1:55pm / Colombia

If this girl wants to fight, do it in her country. Why does she come here to kill our soldiers and colombian brothers? There are a million ways to fight without kill innocent people. How this girl can go and sleep well after put antipersonal mines to leave people without legs and arms? some are little kids who play around these fields full of that shit. Is that a revolution? Many foreigns come to our country to mess it. We do not like you. Leave our country dodo heads.

Colombian 4 November 2010 - 2:34pm / Colombia

It is so sad for me to see people so wrong about the colombian situation...this woman was completely brainwashed, she's so fool and that will lead her to the death. It is a shame because she could be really helping needed people in Colombia, instead of having joined this narco-terrorist group; open your eyes! they just want money and power, no politic nor social ideas, they are killers, terrorists, monsters!!

Anonymous 4 November 2010 - 1:02pm / world

Why is RNW glorifying a woman who loves to kill other people even if for a so-called cause? Is it because she is a Dutch or she listened to RNW broadcast or she supports guerilla warfare in other countries? There are several valid ways to support a cause or an individual, but not killers. She is as good as Taliban!

Carlos G 4 November 2010 - 12:36pm / Colombia

She speaks about equalty but if you read about the death of mono jojoy( one of the greatest killers ), you can see how he had a great ROLEX of 10k, a i dont think all the guerrilla have watches like this.
I invite you, come and see the reality of our great country, our cities, our people, the only bug is the guerrilla, that you will not see because they are in very hidden places like you see en the interview.
Our health inssurance is one of the best in the world.
And yes , we have corruption problems, but is nothing compare to the cancer(guerrilla), they are going down.
We have poor people and rich people like any country in the world.
Finally i dont think to fight the way she is doing it is the best way

Colombian Rights 4 November 2010 - 10:36am / UAE

The FARC are killers, in the drug and in the kidnap business and worst of all terrorist. People in Europe think that it is nice to see this kind of insurgents in 3ed world countries an think they are like a Robin Hood, but don't be fool, they just want propaganda in Europe to cover their real face!!!! Think and find out before you follow a group that has brought millions of people down, placing bombs with no compassion. Colombia is a great please but it has its cancer, cancer that is disappearing, thanks to the Colombian government in the last 8 years.

Colombian 4 November 2010 - 10:27am / Colombia

Jan..... 4 November 2010 - 9:18am / POLAND

There is no reason that could justify any act of violence/terrorism.
Thus, this case is unacceptable from the only beginning.

Anonymous 4 November 2010 - 8:49am / Italy

The revolutions that worked out best are those of Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, maybe also Lula.. Those achieved through coups, putsches and violence in general do not seem to have improved much for the humble people. Changing things in places of big social inequalities like in Colombia unfortunately always takes a long time, and must go through the heads of the people. EDUCATION !!!!! Just that is where we can help...

herman gravenhorst 4 November 2010 - 3:36am / Canada
