Tanja Nijmeijer: I don't want to be rescued

Published on : 3 November 2010 - 12:15pm | By RNW News Desk (screenshot: RNW)
More about:

Dutch FARC guerrilla Tanja Nijmeijer says she does not want to be rescued from the Colombian jungle. In a new video obtained by Radio Netherlands Worldwide she says she will stay with FARC until she dies or until victory is achieved. And if they try to rescue her "we will meet them with machine guns, mines and mortars."

Tanja's father says he is pleased that RNW let him see the videos and photos of his daughter before they were published, but neither parent was prepared to comment further.

Jorge Enrique Botero

The footage of Tanja comes from the freelance Colombian journalist Jorge Enrique Botero. In August he set out into the Colombian jungle where he spoke with FARC leader Jorge Briceno, better known as Mono Jojoy, and with Tanja Nijmeijer. Jojoy was killed in September in a large-scale assault on a FARC encampment by the Colombian army. The journalist had previously filmed Tanja Nijmeijer in 2003 when she was acting as an interpreter for a senior FARC commander. He is currently making a documentary about the FARC.

The video footage (also see RNW's other stories) was shot in August, a month before the Colombian army's assault on a FARC camp which led to speculation that the 32-year-old Dutch woman was dead. The journalist who interviewed her says she is still alive.

In the video Tanja is wearing a green army uniform and has an assault rifle in her lap. She makes it clear she will not consider surrendering:

"If the army and government of Colombia still think or say I was kidnapped let them come here and rescue me. We will meet them with AK47s, bazookas, mines, mortars, everything."

Years of living in camps has not diminished her determination as a FARC guerrilla:

"I am a fighter for the Colombian revolutionary forces and I will remain so until victory is achieved or until I die. There is no turning back. I am proud to be a guerrilla and to be able to work together with the Colombian people and the other guerrillas, to take power and proclaim the revolution."

Tanja, more violence is the last thing we want or need in Colombia. Times are changing and there's hope in finding our way out of this sad period. The FARC is delaying the arrival of peace and justice for the people, but they wont be able to do it for long...
There are lots and lots of good people in Colombia working hard to make of it a better country, but unfortunately there are criminals also, like FARC: professionals in killing, kidnapping and violating every single human right, so if you ever want to help colombian people, watch CAREFULLY who you want to support the criminals or the people.

Don´t fool your readers please

very true.

Miquelangelo 6 November 2010 - 3:25am / Colombia

In Colombia there is inequiality and social injustice but a lot of countries have had those things in their history, even now-developed countries. I understand the fact that in Nordic and Northern Europe countries it is really shocking when they come into contact with the kind of social injustices they see when they come to a country like Colombia. The problem of social injustice is commonplace in Latin America, anyone who has been in Brazil knows it, Mexico is no exception either and the list goes on.
I myself as a colombian have had that feeling of helplessness when you hear, see and live everyday the injustices, the poverty, etc. but it is just stupid idealism or something else to think that joining FARC you will solve anything.
I have the feeling that this woman is not as stupid or naive as she appears to be. She seems determined as any other "guerrillero". I think she entered thinking FARC were Robin Hoods but eventualy she was kind of disapointed. But even then she tried hard to convince hereself she was doing the right thing. Kind of when you decide to become a priest, you made a choice and it is not easy to go back. The other thing is that from what she said in her diary she likes this kind of life, and you really have to like this kind of life when you come from a country like the Nethelands. In any case it is not easy to understand this woman.
Sadly, her wish for the colombian army to come to rescue here was heard and she was almost killed when they killed Mono Jojoy. Keep asking Tanja, maybe next time the army will come to your rescue.

Anonymous 5 November 2010 - 9:30pm / Lalaland

Of course she does not want to be rescued; she is not in a revolution but in a ROBOLUCION(they rob the people of Colombia blind until there will be nothing left). Ahi roban en puta, they say in good Spanish.

Anonymous 5 November 2010 - 3:45pm / Colombia

Colombians hope that everyone understands that 99.9% of Colombian citizens do not share any ideal of the FARC and do not feel represented by them. Before viewing videos tailo made to FARC come to our country and traveling by their cities and forests to understand how terrorists and drug traffickers are destroying the lives of children and Colombian people. We have thousands of poor rural people who have lost their legs and killed by mines placed to protect their drug crops. The FARC took their land, steal their crops and abduct their children to work in their labs and the FARC chiefs and their familes full of money in overseas accounts and their children living and studying at universities in Europe
Please help us to finish this problem: Donñt play their game show to all the world this liar videos.
Thank you

Andres-Bogota 5 November 2010 - 8:11am / Colombia

Smart woman fighting the wrong cause, she's gonna die in the jungle for nothing. The only thing we want is to live in peace, we reject the FARC and the right-wing paramilitaries.

Si esta mujer quiere morir con las botas puestas, así será.

Anonymous 11 November 2010 - 9:45pm / Colombia

I don't agree with "smart woman".
Her diary was found by the army forces and she writes that now that the FARC is corrupt and there is not a valid purpose for the war. She is tired and want to go home.
She can't say anything against the FARC during the interview because she will be killed.
You can get into the guerrilla, and drug trafficking but is very hard to get out because now she has too much information, she would be a risk for the FARC.
So SUCK IT UP

Karla Briane 5 November 2010 - 5:33am / Colombia

Why when RNW talks of the FARC says: left guerillas group, and when he talks of Al qaeda says terrorists? They not know that the FARC has been declared a terrorist!

Ricardo Ralifer 5 November 2010 - 12:57am / Colombia

Not is true that Jorge Enrique Botero is a Freelance journalist. Is a Farc Journalist. Botero justifie violence of farc and attack all govermental actions like farc member. Is a shame that RNW spread out Farc´s propaganda in your web site. Farc not is a "popular army" is an armed group kidnapping kid, eldery and pregnang women. Farc kill civil persons for economical causes. Farc is a terrorist group and destroy bridges, waterways and other esential survivor estructure.

Anonymous 4 November 2010 - 9:53pm

The video is not an example of journalistic excellence. It's pure FARC propaganda bull crap.

Sadly sooner or later the Colombian Armed Forces will grant her wish. Tanja says that she will be a "Guerrillera" until her death.

Instead of providing a video that lacks of substance, RNW should look deeper into Tanja's life and do a report on what causes influenced Tanja decision to join the FARC. What lured her to join the terrorist group. Start not in the jungles of Colombia but start right here in NL; start early in her life; interview high school classmates, teacher, friends, family and neighbors.

Her parents should come out of their shell and indeed comment. They have an opportunity to come out and provide help to other Dutch parents. It may prevent another Dutch boy or girl from being recruited into another terrorist organization.

Colombian 4 November 2010 - 3:49pm / Colombia

I can't believe this woman, she was brainwashed, she is so fool and her end will be in a prison or in a grave. European people please help Colombia with education, with social work, scholarships, hospitals, etc, not joining the most cruel and bloodthirsty Narco-terrorist group of the world; they fight for money and power, that's it, money, dirty money, no ideas, no social concerns, the revolution speech is just their mask to deceive the fools; it is a shame another life wasted, I am sorry for her.

FR 4 November 2010 - 2:55pm / Col

She is not working with people of Colombia. She is working for a Terrorist organization called "FARC", sponsored by drugs, finantial extortion, kidnapping and so on.

Tanja, if you want to really help people of Colombia (we are +47 million who below to the good one's), get out of them and pursue social work, medical care, teaching. You just need the power of you heart, attitude toward care and open your eyes to the reality. To do that, you don't need the power of an AK-47... our Army have enough.

Revolution is dedication, love, fight for ideas, commitment, endevor, challenge...they are just terrorist, they are as we call them in our country "FARC-santes" (Fakers)

Regards,
A Colombian citizen who suffer when people around the world "Don't know what is the reality". FARC are terrorist, just it.

Anonymous 4 November 2010 - 1:57pm / world

RNW glorifying terrorists and guerillas in other countries? Do you know what that means? Your country too can have foreign guerillas fighting your forces...

Anonymous 4 November 2010 - 11:41am / Netherlands

All of you commentors are so sure about yourselves aren't you. Passing judgement based on 5 mins of video. You are no different than she is. The situation in colombia is very tagic, and beyond the realm of imagination for most of us rich westeners here. If there were an easy solution it would have been found by now huh?

Colombian 4 November 2010 - 4:14pm / Colombia

Hi Anonymous, you can be sure all the commentors here are different from this fool girl. The situation in Colombia is not easy but joining a narco terrorist group won't make it better. I am not a "us rich western" as you said, I am a Colombian who has for many years witnessed how the FARC has been destroying this beautiful country, they have no ideas, they are not fighting for a better country. We are more than 45 milliion of good people who are fighting against 20000 FARC's; we are 45 million of good colombians who every morning get up to work and get the food for our families, to study, to get ahead without dealing with drugs or killing inocents. No colombian citizen supports this illegal group, but those who are interested in making money through drugs, kidnapping and death.

God bless you.

Elizabeth Lancaster 4 November 2010 - 2:20am / Australia

If she wants to bring social justice she would have better taken the option to help the poor and not taking the ridiculous and stupid idea of joining far that nowadays are terrorists and narcodealers. Yes it is right that colombia lives under unjustice, social inequality there is no balance , corruption in the goverment, army. but guerrilla never and neverl will be the solution to this conflict? are they really the voice of colombians? when they have killed thousands in colombia as the same the goverments has done?
it is stupid and bizarre to praise someone who was brainwashed to join guerrilla as the superheroes when they are not. they are terrorists and narcodealers nowadays.

the guerrilla did a great job in Holland, nordic countries and Europe, showing off that they would be as socialists as nordic countries are. But all this was the biggest lie and I feel SO SORRY for the Gullable Europeans, gullable all of you in Holland, Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark thinking that
social justice is taking guns and running to the country to take over of the land of the most poorest people in that country.

We have to say, we dont believe in goverment either, they have killed thousands of peasants in joining with paramilitares right wings groups and army.. Yes... it is truth.
But Am I going to take the bloody ridiculous idea of joining the guerrila when they are the same.

Wake Up! Netherlands... Social justice is brougth with compassion and you over there with thousands of christians who support humble causes helping the poor around the world...
Stop being gullable believing all what guerrillas has done in yoiur country....

Thanks Radio Nederland, wanted much to observe and analyze the Mind of Tanja, their words written and to try to understand a little more impressive behavior, give everything for nothing, authentic value, simple and simply amazing.

His parents can be proud of how his daughter, something that most want in life, has observed many human injustices of global human, especially in countries with little or Neo-Coloniasles Development and all that, under the rule of law, would say his policies, but with the same result, extreme inequality. Therefore, his daughter with a lot more than it's worth a coward server, decided that the texts in the form of unjust laws without application or have kept these differences in inequality that would have to overthrow everything that lies by the most rapid possible, since the demogagia is always the same.

Give your life, by people who do not know for another country, everything for nothing.

I wish there was better Tanja Ideas station taking advantage of the Internet, and she was over the violence in the country of Colombia, which saw its entirety the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Colombia as a first step in working together in that order, which and it would start mismao for all countries, where humans live with equal rights Humanao.

Finally, thanks to Radio Netherlands, for letting me know a little more of this amazing generous and courageous Dutch, who wanted to know more about it after Desigual Bombardment Technology, Made in USA, In Good We Trust, which could have been a victim .

Adrian Hurtado 4 November 2010 - 1:27am

She has not done anything to bring social justice or social equality to Colombia. And someone like you shouldn't praise her so much, unless you believe in using force to improve Mexico, a country in Latin America where there is also a lot of poverty and inequality.

As for the most "rapid way"...after 40 years, FARC is still very far from victory. There is nothing "rapid" about this but, on the contrary, the opposite: more FARC means less social progress, not more.
