Taliban retake town in South Waziristan

Published on 20 October 2009 - 1:14pm
More about:

The Taliban have retaken the town of Kotkai in South Waziristan. It had been captured by the Pakistani army on Monday. The town is the birthplace of Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud and lies on the road to the Fort of Sararogha.

Some 28,000 Pakistani troops are currently engaged in an offensive against around 10,000 Taliban militants. The United Nations reports that about 110,000 residents of the region have fled the fighting.

Today two suicide bombings struck an Islamic university in the capital Islamabad, killing six people and injuring between 20 and 40.

For an offensive to succeed you need at least 3 times the manpower of the enemy. The number of Talibans is severely underestimated.
