Afghan forces backed by international troops say they have killed 23 Taliban militants in the south of the country.
Fighting in Uruzgan province, where Dutch troops are stationed, left 16 of them dead as well as an Afghan police officer. Seven other Taliban fighters lost their lives in the neighbouring province of Kandahar. Operations against radical militants in southern Afghanistan are being stepped up in the run-up to elections due on 20 August.
