Taiwan's health authorities have advised people not to talk in lifts in order to prevent the spread of Mexican flu or influenza A (H1N1). Taiwan's Centre for Disease control posted a statement on its website calling on people to "observer lift etiquette," and "avoid talking while using lifts and when sneezing cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or your sleeve".
A Taiwanese pharmaceutical company has announced that it will start clinical trials of a vaccine in two weeks and says it will be able to release the vaccine on the market by the middle of November if clinical trials on human subjects proceed without any problems.
The company began mass production of the influenza A (H1N1) vaccine last month, a move that was severely criticised by members of the medical community as production went ahead without waiting for the results of clinical trials. However, other medical professionals defended the decision on the grounds that a vaccine against Mexican flu is urgently needed.
