Swiss tycoon buys Scottish islands

Published on 27 March 2010 - 9:00pm
More about:

A Swiss millionaire has bought three islands off the west coast of Scotland for 2.7 million euros. The purchase price includes 350 sheep and an unknown number of chickens. The islands lie off the tip of the Mull of Kintyre.

Businessman Michi Meier is now the owner of the tourist island of Sanda, with one resident, a few cottages and a prize-winning pub, and two uninhabited islands in the same chain. The sale has been confirmed by Dick Gannon, who bought the three islands 20 years ago for just 270,000 euros.

Mr Gannon, along with his wife Meg, turned Sanda into a tourist paradise. It is not yet known what Mr Meier will do with the islands but it is rumoured that he will ban tourists.
