Suspected Philippine terrorist arrested

Published on 16 December 2009 - 2:51pm
More about:

The Philippine authorities announced today that one of the suspected founders of the terrorist movement Abu Sayyaf was arrested in Jakarta last month and will be flown to Manila today. He will be transferred to jail on arrival.

Abdul Basir Latip is believed currently to be acting as the financial middleman between al-Qaeda in Saudi Arabia and Abu Sayyaf. He denies having ties to the Philippine terrorist movement.

Abu Sayyaf is allegedly responsible for the largest ever terrorist attack in the Philippines in 2004 when a ferry was bombed, killing 116 people.
