Suspected money launderers caught at Schiphol

Published on 10 September 2009 - 1:01pm
More about:

Police at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport have arrested a man and a woman who were trying to smuggle 504,000 euros into the country.

The couple, who arrived from Venezuela, were unable to say where they got the money from. Police suspect they are part of a money laundering operation.

The pair had hidden the money between clothes in their suitcases.

Dutch police forces say that the number of money smugglers is on the increase. They often resort to the same methods as drugs smugglers, such as swallowing bills wrapped in condoms, using their stomachs as hiding places.
